Learning about the sea’s world, with ITSAS GELA, it is playful and dynamic.
All workshops take place on board the MATER and at the scenery of Pasaia.
Environmental Workshop:
Getting close to the Sea (5-8 years)
This is an approach to the most sensitive side of the sea world. Using each one senses and playing different games, everybody will test and enhance their own abilities. Come to discover; the oceans and seas around the world, their living beings and learn about how the importance of the awareness of our environment.
Coast explorer(8-12 years)
We will learn about a variety of marine species, where they live, what they eat and their adaptation characteristics to the environment through dissections and games.
Marine Ecosystems (>13 years)
Like the real scientist, we will explore the marine ecosystems. In order to get closer to the diversity of marine organisms, we will use the scientific procedure for the study of the environment.
(*) There are also more workshops about oceanography, zoology and pollution adaptable to the profile of each group.
Fishing workshop:
The world of fish (8-12 years)
We´ll cover the route made by fish from their capture by fishermen to our table. We´ll learn to recognize the fish and visit the fish market.
Learning to fish(> 8 years)
Getting close to the fishing basics, one can distinguish the different techniques and their repercussions to the environment. We will learn to fish correctly, by playing the game “No small fishes, thanks!”. And then, by manufacturing our own tackle, each one could test his/her own abilities as fisherman. Good luck!
Fish industry (>13 years)
We will see the different fishing techniques that our fishermen have used and still use today: trawl nets, traps, longlines line … also highlight the issue of fishing activity, key species and overfishing.
Navigation workshop:
The bravest sailors (5-12 years)
Travelling backwards in time 500 years ago, we will feel like the real pirates, corsairs, distinguished navigators and whale hunters. A mixture full of action with, games, theatre and our imagination, we can become in what we want… you can be the bravest pirate!
Port workers (8-12 years)
We will discover the function of the port of Pasajes, interviewing workers and studying their ships and installations.
Sailor for a day (>8 years)
We will become real sailors learning about the duties of a ship. As soon as you are on board, you are the sailor, so let’s start working with: marine knots, the items of navigation, the procedures for the safety on board…
(*) There are more units about; maritime history, ships and ports. All of them will be adapted to the profile of each group.
